The culture wants something from its celebrities. At first it seems like adoration. Later you understand it is something hungrier, more ancient. The Aztecs took only hearts. America demands souls. In the case of Bob Dylan, folkies wanted their troubadour; protesters, their anthem-maker; the women… well who knows what they really wanted.
