The 1980s marked the return of a lot of things. They were called “the greed decade,” which really meant that materialism was coming back with a vengeance. So was a new kind of traditionalism. We were going back to the future. And that required a new kind of movie star. He needed a certain vibe: clean and handsome and a bit square. He had to look like he could fit into a 1950s frat house. Tom Cruise, who became the biggest star of his time, was that to a T. And so, in a slightly shaggier way, was his rival and compatriot in “Top Gun,” Val Kilmer.
