The Year Without a Summer

There’s a poem called “Darkness” by Lord Byron that’s been on my mind lately. To explain why that is, I have to first tell you about the eruption of Mount Tambora. Before I do either of those things, I should say why any of this is relevant.

With hurricanes battering the country and a contentious election lurking around the corner, a lot of people are understandably anxious about the present and fearful for the future. It’s a moment to take stock of what really matters, of the things that will endure when all the storms have passed, as they did after 1815 when it seemed a volcanic winter visited biblical strangeness and tumult upon the world.
