August 12, 2024, marked the sixtieth anniversary of Ian Fleming’s death. His creation James Bond entered the world a little more than a decade before he died, with the 1953 publication of Fleming’s taut Casino Royale. The first Bond novel was well-received in Britain, though it did not quite become an instant bestseller and was largely ignored elsewhere. When Fleming died at the age of fifty-six after a series of heart attacks, Bond paperbacks were read in train cars all over Britain and sold on racks throughout America, and two Bond films, Dr. No and From Russia, with Love,had appeared.
