America’s Cultural Evolution

In widely reported remarks made outside the US Capitol in November 2022, Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer argued that the falling fertility rates among American citizens meant that mass immigration was needed to meet the labor demands of the US economy and maintain social security. “Now more than ever, we’re short of workers. The only way we’re going to have a great future in America is if we welcome and embrace immigrants… all of them.” 

Schumer’s argument echoes similar economic claims made for mass immigration in Europe and East Asia, which both also face problems of cratering birth rates, and passes over in silence another possible solution to the issue, namely encouraging existing citizens to have more children. And Schumer also remains silent, of course, about the social consequences of mass migration: namely, that when different people arrive, different values come with them, and these values may change the culture of the place where they arrive.
