The Most Underappreciated American of Our Time

September 7th marks the one-hundredth birthday of one of the most extraordinary and inspiring Americans of the past century: long-time Hawaiian Senator Daniel Inouye.  

His centennial birthday calls to mind one of the most touching moments in modern political history. A few days before Christmas 2012, in the midst of a crippling political impasse about tax increases and spending cuts that were set to take effect in just a few days, dozens of House and Senate members from both parties stood shoulder to shoulder to witness the first Asian American to ever lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda.
