Who Gets to Define the ‘Good’?

In “Why Liberalism Failed” (2018), Patrick Deneen contended that the American left and right adhere to the same broad philosophy and that this bipartisan consensus is responsible for most of our woes. “Liberalism,” in the sense in which Mr. Deneen used it, signified a collection of social and political conventions that arose in Western nations in the mid-17th century and after: free markets, individual liberty, religious neutrality.
