In New Book, Papadopoulos Says He Didn't Lie to FBI

George Papadopoulos, the former Trump campaign adviser whose barside comments to an Australian diplomat helped trigger what became Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, says in a new book he didn't actually lie to investigators, contradicting what he told a federal judge under oath last year after pleading guilty.

“I realize that I misspoke to the FBI,” Mr. Papadopoulos writes in “Deep State Target,” a detailed account of his interactions with investigators. “The ‘lie' I was charged with...certainly wasn't intentional,” he said.

In the first case brought by special counsel Robert Mueller, Mr. Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about his interactions with an “overseas professor,” later identified as Joseph Mifsud, who allegedly told him Russians had “dirt” on then- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the form of “thousands of emails.”

That April 2016 encounter kicked off a chain of events that ultimately led the FBI to open an investigation in July 2016 into Russian efforts to interfere in that year's presidential election and whether the efforts had any links to the Trump campaign.
