America’s commanders in Iraq combined great rank with even greater self belief. Quite apart from the savage insurgency, sectarian warfare and 50C heat, there was always the knowledge that back home there were those who saw the war as an immoral crusade. So it says much for Ray Odierno, a US commanding general, that for three of Iraq’s bloodiest years, he chose to have a self-confessed anti-war “tree-hugger” by his side.
